Under the Sunshine Act, every payment a drug or device manufacturer makes to a U.S. provider is public record. In program year 2025, that came to $2.89 billion in general payments across 1,020,608 providers. This page maps where it went. Methodology & sources
Data. The 2025 general-payments file from the federal CMS Open Payments program (15.5M payment records disclosed under the Sunshine Act; published June 2026), joined by NPI to the NPPES national provider registry monthly dissemination file. Both datasets are public.
Processing. Payments are rolled up per provider per program year (Python + SQLite), then aggregated by the recipient's practice state, specialty, and paying manufacturer. Research payments and ownership interests are separate CMS datasets and are not included.
Rendering. The map and charts are plain HTML/CSS generated from the aggregated data: each state tile's color maps its value on a square-root scale; bars are linear. Swapping in a new program year regenerates the whole page with no manual redrawing.
Caveats.
- State attribution uses each provider's NPPES practice location; payments to providers no longer in the registry (deactivated NPIs, ~3% of recipients) appear in national totals but not state tiles.
- "General payments" covers consulting, speaking, meals, travel, royalties, and honoraria. It is not salary and not reimbursement.
- Per-provider figures divide a state's total by its count of paid providers, not all providers.
